Social Sciences

The Social Science curriculum is aspirational because our subjects challenge you to ask big questions and think deeply about important issues. They help you understand people, society, and the world around you. Whether you want to become a social worker, lawyer, psychologist, or nurse, our subjects equip you with the skills and knowledge to do so. Social Science subjects help you grow into the person God created you to be, developing a strong sense of purpose, making good choices, and doing good in the world. Through this our subjects encourage empathy, critical thinking, and moral responsibility; qualities that are essential not just for careers, but for life. Our curriculum doesn’t just prepare you for exams, it prepares you to lead, to serve, and to make a meaningful impact. It invites you to wrestle with complex ideas, to speak up for what’s right, and to use your voice to bring about change.

The Social Science curriculum serves our pupils by fostering a commitment to service. Sociology, Psychology, Law, and Criminology encourage reflection on social injustice and the vulnerable members of our society and the structures that shape society. In Health & Social Care, pupils explore the foundations of dignity, respect, and responsibility, principles that guide ethical care and empower individuals to advocate for others. By, developing a deeper insight into fairness, equality, and care for others, our subjects inspire students to make a difference and serve those in need.

The Social Science curriculum allows our pupils to flourish by learning about themselves and others and understanding how to look after their well-being; physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. By engaging with real-world issues, such as mental health, justice, inequality, relationships, and ethics, our students begin to see their place in the world not just as observers, but as contributors. They develop the courage to ask difficult questions, the wisdom to make informed choices, and the character to find their voice and to stand up for what is right. In essence, Social Science helps pupils flourish into thoughtful, purposeful individuals, ready to lead, serve, and thrive in a complex and changing world.

This helps students connect theory to practice and recognise the relevance of their studies in today’s society. Our curriculum is regularly reviewed to ensure it remains responsive to the needs of all learners and reflects the fast-changing world around us. This approach keeps students engaged, challenged, and well-prepared for future study and meaningful careers.

Spirituality in Social Sciences

Spirituality in Social Sciences nurtures the spiritual development of our students by encouraging deep reflection on identity, values, and the human experience. Through engaging with real-world issues and ethical questions, students develop self-awareness and a sense of responsibility. Across subjects, Psychology, Sociology, Health & Social Care, Law, and Criminology students are invited to explore what it means to live with purpose and compassion. Together, these subjects offer a space where students can grow spiritually, to see themselves and others with empathy, to act with integrity, and to serve with purpose and the intention to do good in the world.

Learning beyond the classroom in Social Sciences

Educational opportunities for students, such as visits to courts, care settings, universities, and community organisations, helps to bring theory to life and help students connect classroom learning with real-world contexts. These experiences build cultural capital, foster empathy, critical thinking, and social awareness. Students are encouraged to engage with current affairs by following news stories, documentaries, and podcasts related to our wide range of subjects, helping them to develop informed opinions and understand the relevance of their subjects in today’s world. Access to departmental resources, including reading materials, case studies, PowerPoints, and knowledge organisers, supports independent learning and exam preparation.
